Practical Help

What to Do When Someone Dies

When someone dies, it can feel impossible to know what to do first. You do not have to handle everything at once. Start with the immediate practical steps, ask for help where you can, and take things one step at a time.

Take a moment and contact trusted people

If you can, tell close family or someone you trust. Ask one person to sit with you, make calls, write things down, or help you keep track of decisions.

Contact the right medical or emergency service

What happens next depends on where and how the person died. Hospital, hospice or care home staff will usually guide you. If the death was sudden or unexpected, emergency services, police or a coroner may be involved.

Find official guidance for your area

Official steps vary by country and local authority. UK families can use the GOV.UK step-by-step guide as a starting point.

Register the death when required

Registration rules and timeframes vary. Check your local guidance and ask someone trusted to attend appointments or calls with you if that would help.

Begin funeral arrangements when ready

A funeral director, faith leader, celebrant, local authority or family representative may help you understand the choices. You do not need to make every decision at once.

Notify relevant organisations

In England, Scotland and Wales, Tell Us Once can tell many government organisations in one go where it is available. You may still need to contact banks, insurers, utilities and other organisations separately.

Save memories gently

Photos, messages, voice notes, dates and small stories can be gathered privately. Memorial Garden can help you begin with one memory and add more later.

Start privately with one memory

You do not need to write everything today. Begin with a name, one photo and one sentence, then add more when you are ready.
