Helping Children Understand Loss
Children grieve too, but they may show it differently from adults. They may ask repeated questions, seem fine one minute and upset the next, or express grief through play, behaviour, sleep or school changes.

Gentle guidance
- Use simple, honest language.
- Avoid confusing phrases like gone to sleep.
- Let children ask questions.
- Reassure them that the death was not their fault.
- Keep routines where possible.
- Tell schools or carers what has happened.
- Let them remember through drawings, photos, stories or memory boxes.
- Allow them to attend ceremonies where appropriate and prepared.
